Alongside our extensive range of plants to suit all kinds of garden, over the years we have built up an impressive reputation as growers and suppliers of a number of specialist plant groups including conifers and widely-popular acers both of which are well suited to the Scottish climate.

Japanese Acers make wonderful specimen plants for all but the most exposed gardens. They can be planted as a colourful addition to a mixed shrub border, a specimen in an evergreen or conifer garden or as a special feature in a container as part of a terrace or deck garden.
As a rule, most varieties do not like full exposure to strong sun or wind
(in their natural habitat they are seen at their best at the edge of woodlands where overhanging, larger trees or shrubs shade them from strong sun or damaging winds).
They are most comfortable in a rich, well-drained soil, but not liable to drying out. When planted in the garden prepare the planting site thoroughly by adding fair quantities of composted bark and ericaceous compost to the planting hole (Bulrush make a good open
ericaceous compost which we use in our nursery).
Japanese Acers do not require strong fertilisers. A light application of bone meal in spring (March ? April), followed by regular feeding every three to four weeks from leaf extension to late August with liquid Maxicrop+iron.
Any pruning should be carried out lightly, post leaf-drop up until early spring by trimming back apical shoots by 3 ? 4 inches at most.
The main pest on Japanese Acers is black fly, which normally appears on the young tender leading shoots in spring. This should be treated immediately with a proprietary systemic insecticide and followed by a second application 10 ? 14 days later to catch any hatching eggs.
Red spider mite can be a problem in certain years (symptoms are discolouration of leaves or spotting) ? treat as above, checking the insecticide will work against them.
Downy mildew can affect the underside of leaves in cold, wet summers. A good systemic fungicide such as Systhane or Dithane should be used to clear up the infection.
